2015 TABLE TENNIS COMPETITION OPENING ROUNDS

Students Teach Staff How It Is Done

Congleton High School’s third annual table tennis competition got underway this week with the students teaching the staff how it is done.

Six members of staff were knocked out early on. PE teacher, Mr Naylor was beaten 16-14 by year 11 student Marcus Chadwick in what was a close contest. Mr Warren fell to a 10-15 defeat to Josh Brindley of year 9 and Finley Jackson defeated PE teacher Mrs Henderson 15-11. Science teacher Mr Holmes suffered a defeat against Reece Clowes with Mr Cross also being knocked out by Conor Docherty 10-15. George Sheard and George Archer both progressed at the expensive of Mr French and Mrs Smith respectively.

There was no such defeat for last year’s runner-up and the inaugural CHS table tennis champion, Mr de Souza who strolled through the opening rounds winning 15-2 against both Josef Allen and Matthew Henshall.

The defending champion is still going strong in the competition with James Garside beating debutant, Sam Bilsborough 15-4 and 2013 semi-finalist, Jamie Casey 15-6 in round three. James will play either Mr Franklin or Reece Clowes in the next round. Mr Franklin narrowly beat Matt Gillam 18-16 in round two to set up the tie with Reece Clowes, who has beaten Thomas Worthy and Mr Holmes so far in the competition.

A player who James Garside could meet in the competition’s semi-final stage could be the semi-finalist from last year, IT technician Mr Naylor who has beaten Kieran Turner 15-3 and Logan Clowes 15-6. He will face either year 11 student, George Archer or Mr Donnelly/Tom Evans in the next round.

SSP INDOOR ATHLETICS COMPETITION- 27th January

Indoor Success

Congleton have excelled in athletics over recent years and this continued yesterday (Tuesday 27^th January) as the indoor athletics season began.

CHS took a strong team to the Sandbach School’s Partnership meeting with the year 7 boys team winning their category which see’s them through to the next round in Chester.

BBL FINAL- 12th January

Annual Trip to BBL Final

CHS’ basketballer’s watched Newcastle Eagles claim their third British Basketball League Cup title at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena earlier this month.

Basketball has become so popular at Congleton High School over the last few years that the trip to watch the final has become an annual trip.

With the Eagles’ losing out in the previous two finals by narrow margins, with some of Congleton’s players supporting the Eagles they were hoping that they would be cheering their side to victory this time around.

Newcastle had a nine point advantage going into the final quarter but CHS’ Eagles fans would have remembered the last two years in which they saw Newcastle lose 85-80 in 2013 despite leading with just 90 seconds left and then last year the Leicester Rider’s overturned an 11-point deficit with six minutes to go to beat the Eagles. However, there was not going to be a repeat of this this time around as Newcastle defeated Glasgow Rocks 84-71.
